How to calculate small bites for your event 👇

Save this before ordering appetizers.

The biggest mistake when ordering small bites? Ordering for the headcount instead of the event format.

Here’s the general math:

🥂 30–60 min cocktail hour before dinner
→ 3–5 pieces per person
Guests are grazing, not getting full.

🍸 1–2 hour appetizer reception
→ 5–7 pieces per person
Perfect for mingling with substantial grazing.

✨ 2–3 hour heavy appetizer event
→ 8–10 pieces per person
Think networking events, open houses, showers + cocktail-style celebrations.

🍽️ Small bites replacing a meal
→ 10–14+ pieces per person
No dinner coming? Guests need enough variety + substance to feel fed.

But here’s the important part:

Not every “piece” is equal.

A slider, chicken & waffle bite or substantial skewer contributes much more than a crostini or single shrimp.

And if your menu also includes charcuterie, fruit, salads, breads or other grazing elements, those count toward the overall food volume too.

We also consider event length, time of day, alcohol service, menu variety and whether another meal is being served.

100 guests ≠ 100 of everything.
